a little background on us, my great great grandfather was a horticulturalist back in the early part of the C20th on Taymount estate Perthshire.
After the 2nd world war my grandfather started as a forestry contractor in the early 1950's using old military equipment for extracting the harvested timber, at this time much of the wood was hand loaded onto lorries and cranes were used for the larger logs my father joining the business in the 60's.
In the 70's at this time a lot of hardwood was being cut for pit props and with the dutch elm disease. although these photos below are of a Giant Redwood which was felled in the garden of a house out at Rait, perthshire.
By the late 1970's our focus was more on the cutting of softwoods rather than hardwoods and this is when my father started to take control of how the business would progress and he saw it required more machinary with the use of skylines, skidders and a county forwarder.
into the mid 1980's and technology was moving fast although the Scandinavians were actually decades ahead in the development of mechanised harvesting, we purchased 2 Rottne Blondin harvesters from Sweden.
The forwarder we used was a valmet 832 8ton machine unfortunately this got damaged when carrying to much timber and the diff broke and back wheels fell off.
by the time the 1990's arrived we had moved onto new machines with a Valmet 901 4 wheel thinnings harvester and the newly developed Valmet 840 forwarder.
unfortunately by the mid 1990's we fell victim to some bad accounting and the recession and closed down for approx 10 years before coming back producing firewood full time, although we had sold firewood throughout the decades it had always been a sideline cutting with a chainsaw and axe but with the new direction we had to look again to mechanisation for quantity.

as we developed the firewood business we innevitably found ourselves coming back into tree harvesting as well and we currently clear the seasonal windblow from Bertha Wood on the outskirts of Perth. We initially used the Rottne blondin forwarder but sadly someone saw fit to burn it out in 2014.
we also opted again for a used Valmet harvester this time a 6 wheeled 901.
after the arson and some serious head scratching we traded the harvester for a replacement forwarder and our current machine is now a Valmet 890.3
